Bounce: The Myth of Talent and the Power of Practice

Bounce is a book published in 2011 that, in a nutshell, about what makes the most successful sports stars so successful.

Matthew Syed has competed at the Olympic Games twice, and won the Men's Single Championship at the Commonwealth Games three times at Table Tennis. In Bounce, he sets a scene during his childhood, where a small group of children his age all managed to climb to an elite level, and they all came from the same area. 

Syed doesn't attribute this down to mere chance that a group of the most talented table tennis players in the country were all born at the same time in the same area, he puts it down to practice. They formed a club, practiced hard together to try and beat each other, and pushed each other to perform better and better.

It is a simple premise - the only way to be the best is to work hard & smart. If you do that, then you can count yourself amongst the best. Don't just take my word for it, Rene Meulensteen attributes Cristiano Ronaldo's success to him being a "supreme professional who has worked assiduously on all elements of his game", or how Warren Buffet, one of the worlds wealthiest individuals, applied a process of continuous learning to grow his business and abilities.

One of the main reasons people are in business is to earn themselves some money, and there's no shame in that. However, no business will be successful without hard work at it's core, pushing it forwards up to each new level.

So, you know you can work hard if it means guaranteed business success. What about the working smart? It's easy for Ronaldo to be the best when he's working with the best coaches, because he knows his hard work will pay off.
