Lessons from Game of Thrones and how to Apply them to your Business

Welcome back to part 3 of a series of blogs on Lessons from Game of Thrones and how to apply them to your business. The gritty realism created by George R.R. Martin is not only entertaining to read and watch, but also creates some exciting situations that have a great deal of relevance and lessons to be learned whatever your business.

If you missed them then you can find the first two parts here:

Part One - Robb Stark

Part Two - Tywin Lannister

In today's part I’m going to explore the winning strategy of Danaerys Targaryen, and the secret behind her irresistible rise.

Bounce

Danaerys Targaryen starts out as a seemingly scared young woman in a world she has no control over, but she quickly learns that she can seize the initiative over her own narrative more easily than she'd previously thought.

Both her and Viserys are placed in an alien situation surrounded by Dothraki, but it is Danaerys that truly embraces the Dothraki culture, and subsequently becomes their much loved Khaleesi.

We can all learn from this, that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, that the best thing we can do is make the best of where we find ourselves. Moaning and sulking like Viserys will not serve to improve the situation, but demonstrating the bounceabackability mentioned by Jan previously, means you can take charge of your situation again.

Get yourself a USP (Unique Selling Point)

Danaerys starts her long journey building an army to take to Westeros when she becomes the Mother of Dragons. No matter how many bodies she adds to her army, it remains the Dragons who will strike the biggest fear into her enemies, and will draw more people to join her army.

In your business, you will you need a USP, a niche in which to target, in order to stand out in todays world. Markets are over-saturated and you need to give your potential customers the stand out incentive they need to pick you over their competition.

Like Danaerys does with her dragons, you will need to nurture your niche, and develop it to make sure it becomes what you want it to be. You will need to adapt it to the ever changing market and make sure it is consistently aimed at your target markets needs.

In the next part I will talk about everyone’s favourite little rogue Arya Stark, and how her iron grit can turn situations in her favour.  Thanks for reading my Lessons from Game of Thrones, I’m Thomas Szczepanski, Master Accountant! Check me out on Google+
